What we love about San Miguel
Adriana and I truly enjoy this colonial gem situated about 160 miles north of Mexico City that remains a relatively untouched antique city of the old world. This small, quiet, charming town with its mild weather and slow pace has captured our hearts. From our first stroll down the cobble stone streets of San Miguel Allende, we discover why people from all over the world come, return and, in many cases, decide to stay as we did. San Miguel de Allende is almost never hot and enjoys a mild climate year-round with cool evenings. San Miguel is also a very green city, with trees, flowers, botanical gardens, and is surrounded by hills.
High in the cool hills, this colonial gem of cobblestone streets and picturesque churches inspires artists with its color, character and light. Baroque, neoclassical and neogothic mix in the city's buildings, notably at the pink stone 18th-century church on the Plaza Principal. Founded in 1542, the city is a mix of Hispanic and Mesoamerican influences.
There is a blessed absence of traffic lights, parking meters, billboards, and neon signs. The city seems free from the pressures of modern living. San Miguel de Allende has been declared a national monument: no building is allowed that doesn't conform to colonial style.
Weather, climate, temperatures: 22ºC (72ºF) from September to February and 23ºC - 26ºC (74ºF to 80ºF) from March to August with a rainy season May to October and the dry season from November to April.
If you have never been to San Miguel or are returning to visit, our city and Case Adriana will surpass all your expectations.

Cultural HistoryAt the beginning of the 19th century, San Miguel played a prominent role in the process of Mexican independence. One of the main leaders of the struggle for independence, Ignacio Allende, was born in the town, currently named after this national hero. Born Ignacio Allende y Unzaga, was a captain of the Spanish Army in Mexico who came to sympathize with the Mexican independence movement. He attended the secret meetings organized by Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez, where the possibility of an independent New Spain was discussed. He fought along with Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in the first stage of the struggle, eventually succeeding in leadership of the rebellion. Spanish colonial authorities captured Allende while he was in Coahuila and executed for treason in Chihuahua.
Originally, the independence movement was to be led jointly by Allende and Aldama. A change of plans prompted by the discovery of the conspiracy forced Hidalgo to start the rebellion earlier than agreed. The "Grito de Dolores" uttered by Hidalgo signaled the beginning of the revolution, after which the conspirators rallied behind him. The rebel army quickly captured the town of Dolores and marched towards San Miguel el Grande, where Allende obtained the support of his cavalry regiment. |
